Michael Hastings is the Global Head of Citizenship and Diversity with KPMG International. Previously he was the BBC’s first Head of Corporate Social Responsibility. Michael is a non executive Director for British Telecom on BT’s Community Support Committee. Michael represents KPMG International on the Global Corporate Citizenship International committee of the World Economic Forum and also serves on the Oversight Board for SIFE – Students in Free Enterprise. Michael is also a member of the WBCSD - World Business Council on Sustainable Development representing KPMG. Michael is a Board Member of the International Business Leaders Forum.
In January 2003, Michael was awarded the honour of a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in recognition of his services to crime reduction. In July 2005, Michael was awarded the honour of an independent peerage to the House of Lords. Also in 2005, Michael received the UNICEF award for his ‘outstanding contribution to understanding and effecting solutions for Africa’s children.’
He is Chairman of Crime Concern having been a founding Trustee in 1988. He was also a former Commissioner (1993 – 2001) with the Commission for Racial Equality and served for nine years advising on race relations in the UK. Michael was also founding Chairman of Childnet International & of SpringBoard for Children, which focuses on literacy and education development, where he remains a Patron and he is also a Patron of ToyBOX, a charity working with street children in Latin America and also as Patron to ZANE, a Zimbabwe relief and aid organisation.
His background is in journalism, reporting and presenting programmes for ITV and the BBC and prior to that working on strategy and operations with the Downing Street Policy Unit covering race & urban policy, starting his career in education and community initiatives having graduated in Theology and Education from Westminster College Oxford in 1980..
