TROILUS AND CRESSIDA

To continue a tradition that started back in November 2005, GNE The Hague has been able to strike a special deal with the Koninklijke Schouwburg for one of their international Shakespeare productions and members of the Oxford and Cambridge Society can benefit from these reduced rates.

On
Wednesday, 9th April 2008,

GNE members will be able to enjoy Shakespeare’s play

Troilus and Cressida

With Troilus and Cressida, the company’s director Declan Donnellan has staged Cheek by Jowl’s most ambitious production yet. Shakespeare wrote the intriguing Troilus and Cessida shortly after Hamlet. The play is set during the Trojan war, which has been underway for seven years. Troilus, a Trojan prince, woos Cressida, who is traded to the Greeks as a prisoner of war. When Troilus visits his beloved at the Greek camp, he sees her with Diomedes and breaks off the engagement. Whilst all this is happening, we also witness Nestor and Ulysses scheming to draw Achilles back into battle against the Greeks.

OXFORD ALUMNI WEEKEND

The first Oxford Alumni weekend took place on 14-16 September 2007. More than 750 alumni attended events ranging from Lectures and Discussions to Tours to Dinners. It was combined with an extraordinary degree day affording those of us so far not organised enough to collect our MAs an opportunity to do so. The formal report can be found at www.alumniweekend.ox.ac.uk and there is a plan to make it a yearly event.

Perhaps for 2008 we should organise a party to attend from the Netherlands branch of the society?

CAMBRIDGE ART EXHIBITION

Dear Mr. Banton.

We are glad to invite you  to visit two major exhibitions by British artists in a Cambridge College this Autumn.

‘Elemental Energies' comprises a series of 13 paintings by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912-2004), on show at Trinity Hall in the Graham Storey Room and Leslie Stephen Room. Barns-Graham was one of the foremost modernist painters of the British post-war art scene. She was a member of the St Ives group which flourished during the war years before becoming a founder member in 1949 of the breakaway group, the Penwith Society of Arts. Barns-Graham's style lay between the abstract and representational and typically drew on inspiration from landscapes, such as Cornish rocks, sunsets and shattered ice on puddles. Her work has latterly received due acclaim and this exhibition continues a season of shows celebrating her work.

Mel Gooding is the curator of this show and catalogue essay writer.

‘Frames of Reference' is a series of cast aluminium sculptures by Jonathan Clarke. Inspired by – but not representing – images from the 1st World War, Clarke's evocations of this period are stark and uncompromising pieces which are well displayed throughout the grounds of the College. Trinity Hall annual exhibition programme is a recent venture for the College. In this, its second year, it is making its mark as a College of visual excitement to complement its reputation in music and drama.

Ron Howell is the curator of Frames of Reference.

Elemental Energies is open to the public from Monday 8 October to Sunday 16 December on Mondays and Sundays only, from 9am to12 noon and from 2pm to 3.30pm. Frames of Reference is open to view daily between the hours of 9am to 12 noon and 2pm to 3.30pm. Certain paintings in the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham show are for sale (indicated beneath each piece). All of Jonathan Clarke's sculptures are available for sale. Catalogues are available at the Porters' Lodge for sale for each show at £10 (Wilhelmina Barns-Graham) and £5 (Jonathan Clarke).

For further information, please contact the University of Cambridge Office of Communications on Tel: 01223 332300, Email: events@admin.cam.ac.uk.
